Depending on your creative brief, I work from 5 different kinds of locations:

Your Home - Often the best location, your home is an environment that reflects your personality and of course contains plenty of useful artefacts and symbols of your life. I'm happy to visit anywhere in the UK or overseas, travel expenses included.

Your Workplace - If you're commisisoning a business portrait, the workplace is the natural location - whether an office, depot, factory or studio. I create a great many of my paintings from workplaces, simply because I love their activity, and their importance to our economy.

My Studio - I'm lucky enough to have a spacious well-lit studio and it's great for portraits that require more ambitious backgrounds - perhaps the addition of dramatic scenes or locations which we simply can't get access to.

Third Party Location - I'm happy to go anywhere unusual if it takes your fancy - countryside, gritty industrial estate, your home town, National Trust grounds, moody night-time suburb, the choice is yours. Getting it to work creatively is the key.

Painting from Photos - If this is the only course open to us I'm happy to work from a good cluster of shots to get sufficient facial coverage to create a good portrait model. I'm flexible though - for example if it's a posthumous portrait, I can work with whatever is to hand.
